Trauma

Many describe living with trauma as carrying an invisible weight - a burden that shapes how you see yourself, others, and the world around you. Whether your trauma stems from a single overwhelming event or years of painful experiences, its impact can ripple through every aspect of your life, affecting your sense of safety, your relationships, and your ability to move forward with confidence.

Trauma doesn't always look the way we expect it to. It can surface as sudden flashbacks, nightmares, or panic attacks. It can also show up more quietly - through difficulty trusting others, feeling emotionally numb, or constantly being on edge. You might find yourself avoiding certain places, people, or memories, or struggling with feelings of shame and self-blame that you can't seem to shake.

At On Your Mind Counselling, we understand that trauma affects everyone differently. Whether you've experienced childhood abuse, a violent assault, a serious accident, the loss of a loved one, or any other deeply distressing event, we are here to meet you where you are. Our trauma-informed therapists create a safe, compassionate space where you can process your experiences, heal at your own pace, and reclaim your sense of self and safety.

What is Trauma and How Does it Manifest?

Trauma refers to the psychological and emotional response to an event or series of events that are deeply distressing or disturbing. It occurs when an experience overwhelms your ability to cope, leaving a lasting impact on your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. While trauma is often associated with life-threatening situations, it can also result from experiences that threaten your sense of safety, dignity, or connection to others.

Trauma manifests in many different ways, and no two people will respond to traumatic events in exactly the same manner. Some individuals may experience symptoms immediately after the event, while others may not notice the effects until months or even years later. The way trauma shows up in your life depends on a variety of factors, including the nature of the event, your personal history, your support system, and your coping strategies.

Common types of trauma include:

  1. AcuteTrauma: Results from a single, distressing event such as a car accident, natural disaster, assault, or sudden loss of a loved one
  2. Chronic Trauma: Arises from repeated and prolonged exposure to highly stressful situations, such as ongoing domestic violence, childhood abuse, or living in a war zone
  3. Complex Trauma: Involves exposure to multiple traumatic events, often of an invasive and interpersonal nature, typically beginning in childhood (such as neglect, emotional abuse, or abandonment)
  4. Developmental Trauma: Occurs during critical developmental periods in childhood, affecting the way a person forms attachments, regulates emotions, and views themselves and the world
  5. Vicarious or Secondary Trauma: Experienced by individuals who are exposed to the traumatic experiences of others, such as healthcare workers, first responders, therapists, or caregivers
  6. Historical or Intergenerational Trauma: Trauma that is passed down through generations, often affecting entire communities or cultural groups (such as the trauma experienced by survivors of genocide, slavery, or colonization)

Trauma can also manifest through:

  • Medical Trauma: Distress related to life-threatening illnesses, invasive medical procedures, or prolonged hospital stays
  • Betrayal Trauma: Occurs when someone you depend on for survival or emotional support causes you harm, such as abuse by a parent, partner, or trusted authority figure
  • Collective Trauma: Shared traumatic experiences within a community, such as during pandemics, mass shootings, or societal upheaval
  • Attachment Trauma: Results from inconsistent, neglectful, or harmful care-giving in early childhood, leading to difficulties in forming secure relationships later in life

No matter the type of trauma you've experienced, it's important to recognize that your response is valid and that healing is possible with the right support.

Common Symptoms of Trauma

Trauma impacts people in a wide variety of ways, affecting not only your emotional and mental health but also your physical body and your ability to connect with others. Recognizing these symptoms is an important first step toward understanding how trauma may be influencing your life and seeking the support you need to heal.

Re-Experiencing Symptoms:

  • Intrusive memories or flashbacks of the traumatic event that feel as though they are happening again
  • Nightmares or disturbing dreams related to the trauma
  • Intense emotional or physical reactions when reminded of the trauma (such as sweating, shaking, or panic)
  • Difficulty separating past trauma from present reality

Avoidance Symptoms:

  • Avoiding people, places, conversations, or activities that remind you of the trauma
  • Suppressing or pushing away thoughts and feelings related to the traumatic event
  • Difficulty remembering important aspects of the trauma (dissociative amnesia)
  • Withdrawing from relationships, hobbies, or activities you once enjoyed

Hyperarousal Symptoms:

  • Being constantly on edge or feeling like you need to be on high alert for danger
  • Difficulty sleeping or staying asleep
  • Irritability, anger outbursts, or emotional reactivity
  • Difficulty concentrating or feeling easily distracted
  • Exaggerated startle response (feeling jumpy or easily startled by sudden noises or movements)

Negative Changes in Mood and Thinking:

  • Persistent negative beliefs about yourself, others, or the world (such as "I am broken" or "No one can be trusted")
  • Feelings of shame, guilt, or self-blame related to the trauma
  • Emotional numbness or detachment from others
  • Loss of interest in activities that once brought joy or meaning
  • Difficulty experiencing positive emotions such as happiness, love, or satisfaction
  • Feelings of hopelessness about the future

Physical Symptoms:

  • Chronic pain, headaches, or unexplained body aches
  • Digestive issues, nausea, or stomach problems
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Increased heart rate, sweating, or trembling
  • Tension in muscles, particularly in the shoulders, neck, or jaw

Dissociation Symptoms:

  • Feeling disconnected from your body or emotions (depersonalization)
  • Feeling as though the world around you is unreal or dreamlike (derealization)
  • Losing track of time or having gaps in memory
  • Feeling like you are observing yourself from outside your body

Relationship and Social Symptoms:

  • Difficulty trusting others or forming close relationships
  • Fear of intimacy or vulnerability
  • Feeling isolated, alone, or misunderstood
  • Difficulty expressing emotions or communicating needs
  • Increased conflict or tension in relationships

While experiencing some of these symptoms occasionally may be a normal response to stress, when they persist over time and interfere with your daily life, relationships, or sense of well-being, it may be a sign that trauma is significantly impacting you. Seeking support from a trauma-informed therapist can help you process these experiences, develop healthy coping strategies, and begin the journey toward healing.

How We Can Support You

At On Your Mind Counselling, our team of trauma-informed therapists understands that healing from trauma is not a linear process - it requires patience, compassion, and specialized care tailored to your unique experiences and needs. We are committed to creating a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore your trauma at your own pace, develop effective coping strategies, and reclaim your sense of safety and empowerment.

We recognize that every person's experience with trauma is different, and we work collaboratively with you to identify the symptoms and challenges that are causing you the most distress. Whether that means reducing the intensity of flashbacks, improving your ability to trust and connect with others, addressing feelings of shame or guilt, or simply finding ways to feel more grounded and present in your daily life, our approach is centered on your goals and your healing journey.

Therapeutic Modalities

Our therapists are trained in a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches that have been proven effective in treating trauma and its related symptoms. We use these modalities to help you process traumatic memories, regulate difficult emotions, and build resilience.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is one of the most well-researched and effective treatments for trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This specialized therapy helps you reprocess traumatic memories so that they become less distressing and overwhelming.

EMDR works by targeting the traumatic memories that are stored in your brain in a fragmented and unprocessed way. Through guided bilateral stimulation - such as following a therapist's hand movements with your eyes, listening to alternating sounds, or feeling alternating taps - your brain is able to reprocess these memories in a way that reduces their emotional charge and integrates them into your broader life narrative.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to discuss the trauma in extensive detail, making it a particularly helpful option for those who find it difficult to verbalize their experiences. Many clients report significant relief after just a few EMDR sessions, experiencing a noticeable reduction in flashbacks, nightmares, and emotional reactivity related to their trauma.

Our therapists Robin Johal and Keyu Guo are EMDR-trained and specialize in helping clients work through traumatic experiences using this powerful approach. Whether you're dealing with a single traumatic event or complex, long-standing trauma, EMDR can be an effective tool for healing.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a structured, evidence-based approach specifically designed to help individuals process trauma while addressing the thoughts and behaviours that are contributing to ongoing distress.

TF-CBT helps you:

  • Identify and challenge negative beliefs about yourself and the trauma (such as "It was my fault" or "I should have done something differently")
  • Learn coping skills to manage trauma-related emotions such as fear, anger, and shame
  • Gradually confront trauma-related memories in a safe and controlled way (exposure therapy) to reduce avoidance and build resilience
  • Reframe your understanding of the trauma in a way that promotes healing and empowerment

Somatic Therapy

Trauma is not just stored in the mind - it is also held in the body. Somatic therapy recognizes that traumatic experiences can create physical tension, pain, and dysregulation in the nervous system. This approach focuses on helping you reconnect with your body, release stored trauma, and regulate your nervous system.

Somatic therapy helps you:

  • Become more aware of bodily sensations and how they relate to your emotional state
  • Learn techniques to release physical tension and trauma held in the body
  • Develop a greater sense of safety and groundedness in your physical self
  • Regulate your nervous system to reduce hyperarousal and increase feelings of calm

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT is particularly helpful for individuals who experience intense emotions, difficulty regulating their emotional responses, or engage in harmful behaviours as a result of trauma. This therapy combines elements of mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

DBT helps you:

  • Learn mindfulness skills to stay present and grounded, even when triggered by trauma-related memories
  • Develop healthy ways to tolerate distressing emotions without turning to avoidance or harmful coping mechanisms
  • Improve your ability to communicate your needs and set boundaries in relationships
  • Build a life worth living by aligning your actions with your values, even in the presence of trauma

What to Expect From Trauma-Focused Therapy

Healing from trauma takes courage, and we deeply honor the bravery it takes to begin this journey. Trauma therapy is not about forgetting what happened or "getting over it" - it's about processing your experiences in a way that allows you to move forward with greater freedom, peace, and resilience.
